If you’ve been trying to conceive without answers—or you’ve noticed your energy, mood, and cycles just feel “off”—your thyroid may be playing a bigger role than you realize.
As a Functional Medicine Health Coach serving women in McKinney, Allen, Richardson, Frisco, Plano, Prosper, and Dallas, TX, I see thyroid health show up often in my fertility clients. Many of them have been told their thyroid labs are “normal,” yet their symptoms tell another story.
Let’s dive into why the thyroid is so important for fertility, the symptoms you don’t want to ignore, the mineral connection, and what labs to ask for. I’ll also share five practical tips to support your thyroid naturally.
Why Thyroid Health Is Crucial for Fertility
Your thyroid is a small butterfly-shaped gland in your neck, but it has a huge impact on hormones, ovulation, and pregnancy. Thyroid hormones regulate metabolism, energy production, and play a key role in reproductive health.
When thyroid function is low (even slightly), your body may:
Struggle to regulate hormones like estrogen and progesterone
Delay or prevent ovulation
Impact egg quality
Increase risk for miscarriage or complications in pregnancy
For women trying to conceive, this means that even subtle thyroid imbalances can make it harder to get—and stay—pregnant.
Common Symptoms of Poor Thyroid Health
Many women don’t realize their symptoms could be thyroid-related. Some signs include:
Fatigue or brain fog
Feeling cold all the time or cold hands/feet
Hair thinning or loss (especially outer eyebrows)
Constipation or sluggish digestion
Irregular or heavy periods
Anxiety, mood swings, or depression
Difficulty losing weight despite healthy habits
If you’re nodding along to several of these, your thyroid may need attention.
The Mineral Connection: Why Minerals Matter for the Thyroid
Minerals are the spark plugs of the body, and the thyroid cannot function properly without them (even when bloodwork looks normal).
Some of the most important include:
Iodine: Needed to produce thyroid hormones (T3 and T4).
Selenium: Helps convert inactive T4 to active T3.
Zinc & Copper: Support hormone balance and thyroid enzyme activity.
Magnesium: Supports adrenal health, which is closely tied to thyroid function.
Sodium & Potassium: Influence cellular energy and stress resilience, both of which impact thyroid health.
When these minerals are out of balance—something I often see on Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA)—thyroid health and fertility can suffer.
What Bloodwork Should You Ask For?
Many women are only tested for TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone), but that alone doesn’t give the full picture. If you’re trying to conceive, ask your provider for a more complete panel, including:
TSH
Free T4
Free T3
Reverse T3
Thyroid antibodies (TPOAb and TgAb)
These markers can uncover subclinical thyroid issues, autoimmune patterns, or conversion problems that could be missed otherwise.
5 Tips to Support Your Thyroid for Fertility
Here are five simple, effective ways to start supporting your thyroid health today:
Prioritize mineral-rich foods – Include sea vegetables (for iodine), 2 Brazil nuts a day (for selenium), a handful of pumpkin seeds (for zinc), and leafy greens (for magnesium).
Balance blood sugar – Eat protein, fat, and fiber at each meal to reduce stress on your thyroid and adrenals.
Reduce environmental toxins – Swap plastics, choose clean personal care products, and filter your water (high quality filter not the one from the fridge) to limit endocrine disruptors.
Get quality sleep – Aim for 7–9 hours nightly. Sleep is when your body restores hormones and thyroid function.
Manage stress intentionally – Try breathwork, journaling, gentle movement, or mindfulness to keep cortisol in check (high stress hormones can suppress thyroid function).
Final Thoughts
If you’re in McKinney, Allen, Richardson, Frisco, Plano, Prosper, or Dallas, TX and you’ve been struggling with fertility, thyroid health is an essential piece of the puzzle. With the right testing, nutrition, and lifestyle support, your thyroid can become an ally instead of a
hidden barrier.
At Fertility to Wellness, I help women uncover the root causes of hormone imbalances and build the foundations of health so their bodies feel safe to conceive.
